Daniel Acker was president of the Buffalo, New York branch of the NAACP from 1972 until his death in 1997.  Dan was active in many of the Buffalo organizations that fought for civil rights in the 1960s - the 1990s.   He was a co-founder of Housing Opportunities Made Equal (H.O.M.E.) in the 1960s to work for equal access to descent housing for all Americans.  He was a major player in the federal lawsuit that led to the Court ordered desegregation of the Buffalo Public Schools.  Mr. Acker was also an appointed member of numerous state and local governmental oversight boards.  The papers in this collection were papers that Mr. Acker kept at his home.  Most of the official papers and letters connect to his involvement with the various groups are filed with the records and papers of the organizations and groups with whom he worked, for instance:

(1) C.C.H.R. Records and Papers are in the SUNY at Buffalo Archives. That organization was a co-sponsor of the Buffalo Schools desegregation campaign. 

(2) H.O.M.E. Records and Papers are in the microfilmed "Buffalo Afro-American Collection," held by the Buffalo State College Library. 

3) Buffalo NAACP Papers also at Buffalo State College.  In essence, the records of Mr. Acker's involvement in community activities will also be found in other places.  His obituary lists some of his many activities.
