The Buffalo Irish Times

Buffalo Irish Times

The Buffalo Irish Times started and remains as a bimonthly  publication sponsored by the Gaelic American Athletic Association Inc  The  Gaelic American Athletic Association, Inc. is best known as the building they own,  renovate and operate called the Buffalo Irish center, located at 245 Abbott Rd., Buffalo, NY 14220. The idea for a local Irish newspaper was inspire from a conversation between Mary C. Heneghan and Michael McCafferty while they attended a lamb roast dinner at a local Serbian club.  It was felt that local newspapers at the time were very lax when reporting Irish events and happenings in the Buffalo and Western New York area.  Therefore, out of inspiration, hard work, and perseverance, this Buffalo-based Irish newspaper was born.

In March of 1990, the first issue of the Buffalo Irish Times  was published with Mary C. Heneghan and Michael McCafferty as editors.  Over the years Mary has remained as editor.   Michael became assistant editor joined with Seamus McMahon as a second assistant editor to handle the growing staff of twelve contributing writers. The Buffalo Irish Times has evolved into an outlet for a great many Irish organizations in the Western New York area.  Today, the Buffalo Irish Times contains articles, cultural events, Irish dance happenings, political views, photos, club reports, stories, and genealogical queries that are all written without monetary compensation to the authors.  Volunteerism plays a major contribution to the success of this newspaper.  The paper is funded through advertisements and subscriptions with any outstanding balances absorbed by the Buffalo Irish Center’s GAAA organization. The ideal of fostering an interest in our Irish and Irish-American heritage has blossomed from the original printing of nearly 200 copies into 3000 copies that includes over 1200 paid subscribers today.   The Buffalo Irish Times continues growing with subscriptions throughout the United States, Canada, and around the world.  The dream lives on….

The MFRHC at Buffalo State College currently holds issues FEB/MAR 1992 through OCT/NOV 2001 on microfilm.
